➤ The sustainable main material: cotton
Cotton is a natural plant fiber that thrives in tropical and subtropical regions and has been used by humans for thousands of years. For our products, we source sustainably harvested cotton from local farmers in Java. The fields are fertilized naturally and the cotton bolls are picked by hand. After ginning, the cotton is pressed into bales, combed and spun into yarn by hand. Our cotton is skin-friendly and free from chemical treatments and is therefore not suitable for tumble drying.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we attach great importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the skilled trades, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to do something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process causes hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: from the raw material to the finished throw
For our handmade Linggah throws, the cotton is first dyed black to achieve its characteristic deep shade. Experienced artisans at our production partners on the Indonesian island of Java then weave the thick, dyed yarn on traditional hand looms into a dense, high-quality fabric, which is later sewn into throws.
