➤ The sustainable main material: rattan
This rapidly renewable raw material is obtained from rattan palms, which grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and trunks are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The inside of the branches and trunks are used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate wickerwork such as the well-known “Viennese wickerwork”. As rattan palms need an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing is an incentive for the local population to maintain healthy, natural forests.
Other material: Wood
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we attach great importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the skilled trades, as they can use the skills they learned early on to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to do something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process causes hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: from the raw material to the finished lampshade
Our Kamari vases are carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Lombok. The process begins with a round piece of wood being hollowed out and shaped to form the bottom half of the vase, creating a bowl-like base. The upper part consists of weaving thick rattan fibers attached with fine strips of rattan bark. Finally, the entire vase is sprayed with a rich brown color. Create any vase shot
